Reverse transcriptase is an enzyme used by viruses to create complementary DNA from RNA. It is most commonly associated with the retroviruses, but other viruses, such as hepatitis B use it as well. Most drugs used to treat retroviruses, including HIV, block the action of reverse transcriptase.
